A classic Caesar salad is the ultimate warm‑weather crowd‑pleaser. Crisp romaine lettuce, crunchy homemade croutons, and a bold, garlicky Caesar dressing that makes a simple salad feel special. Perfect for quick lunches, easy summer dinners, or serving alongside the BBQ.

A Caesar salad can feel both timeless and totally everyday. Caesar salad was invented by Caesar Cardini, an Italian‑American restaurateur who threw it together during a busy Fourth of July rush in 1924. A bit of chaos, a bit of improvisation, and suddenly you've got a dish the whole world now claims as a favourite.
For my family, it's a salad that shows up in real family life. It’s great for when we need something quick but delicious and we always pretend this counts as a healthy dinner!! A Caesar salad is particularly nice in the summer evenings when crisp romaine and crunchy homemade croutons just hit the spot. Add a spoonful of my garlicky Caesar dressing, maybe some chicken if you're feeling fancy, and you've got a meal that is comforting, familiar and a little bit special.
If you want to take it further, this salad also makes the perfect base for my chicken Caesar salad wraps. These are great for picnics, lunchboxes, lunches or dinners.

Ingredients and substitutions

See recipe card for quantities.
- Romaine lettuce – The classic base for any Caesar. It's crisp, refreshing and holds up beautifully under a creamy dressing. If you can't find romaine, use little gem or even iceberg for extra crunch.
- Croutons – Homemade are best for that golden, garlicky crunch, but shop‑bought work in a pinch. Swap for toasted sourdough chunks or even crispy chickpeas if you want something different
- Parmesan – Freshly grated or shaved gives the best flavour. Pecorino or Grana Padano are great alternatives if that's what you've got.
- Caesar dressing – Homemade gives you that bold, garlicky, anchovy‑rich flavour, but a good quality store bought dressing is totally fine. Greek yoghurt‑based dressings work if you want something a little lighter.
What equipment will you need?
- Vegetable peeler – use this to shave the parmesan. Parmesan shavings work so much better than grated in this recipe.
How do I make Caesar salad?
A Caesar salad comes together in just a few simple steps. Nothing fancy, nothing fussy, just crisp lettuce, crunchy croutons and that bold, creamy dressing doing all the work. Follow the method below and you'll have a fresh, reliable bowl on the table in minutes.
1: Pull the romaine leaves off individually, then wash and pat them completely dry .

2: Cut or tear the leaves into your preferred size, I like mine on the chunky side for the best crunch.

3: Add the Caesar dressing to a large mixing bowl, then tip in the lettuce. Toss well so every leaf is lightly coated.

4: Using a vegetable peeler, shave the parmesan straight into the bowl .

5: Add the homemade croutons, give everything a final gentle mix, and serve immediately.

Serving suggestions
- Keep it classic with extra Parmesan and a crack of black pepper, perfect as a light lunch or starter.
- Make it a meal by adding grilled chicken, crispy bacon, or roasted chickpeas for a veggie boost.
- Serve it alongside the BBQ – it pairs brilliantly with grilled steaks, burgers, or skewers.
- Turn it into a spread with homemade croutons, Caesar dressing, and chicken Caesar wraps for an easy summer dinner.
- Go picnic‑style by packing the components separately and tossing just before serving to keep everything crisp.

Variations
Storage and freezing
Storage – Caesar salad is at its best when everything stays crisp, so store the components separately if you can. Keep the chopped romaine in an airtight container lined with a piece of kitchen paper to absorb moisture. It'll stay fresh for 2-3 days. Croutons should be stored at room temperature in an airtight tub so they keep their crunch. The dressing will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freezing – Caesar salad doesn't freeze well as a whole, the lettuce wilts, the Parmesan loses its texture and the dressing can split. I wouldn’t reccomend freezing this recipe

- Dry your lettuce properly – damp leaves are the fastest way to a soggy Caesar. Spin it, pat it, do whatever you need to do… just make sure it's bone‑dry before dressing.
- Chill everything – cold romaine + cold dressing = that restaurant‑style crunch we all chase.
- Dress lightly, then add more – Caesar dressing is bold. Start with a little, toss well, then add extra if needed.
- Use big Parmesan shavings – they melt slightly on the leaves and give you those salty, silky bites that make a Caesar irresistible.
- Add croutons at the end – keep them crunchy by tossing them through right before serving.
- Serve immediately – a Caesar waits for no one; once dressed, it's best eaten straight away.
FAQ
What ingredients are in Caesar salad?
A classic Caesar is made with crisp romaine lettuce, crunchy croutons, Parmesan and a creamy Caesar dressing. That's it, simple, timeless and always delicious.
What salad can Diabetics eat?
Many salads can work well for people managing diabetes, especially those built around leafy greens, lean proteins (like chicken, tuna or tofu), non‑starchy vegetables and dressings that aren't too sugary. A Caesar can fit the bill if you go lighter on the dressing and add a good protein source.
What are common Caesar salad mistakes?
The big ones: not drying the lettuce properly, overdressing the salad, using limp croutons, skipping the seasoning and using pre‑grated Parmesan that doesn't melt or cling properly.
Are Caesar salads actually healthy?
They can be. The base of romaine and Parmesan is great, but the dressing is where the calories live. A lighter homemade dressing or a smaller amount keeps it balanced, and adding protein makes it a satisfying meal.
Can I make Caesar salad ahead of time?
Yes, just keep everything separate. Store the lettuce, croutons, Parmesan and dressing in their own containers and toss right before serving to keep it crisp.
Can I make it without anchovies?
Absolutely. Many dressings use Worcestershire sauce for that savoury depth, or you can simply choose an anchovy‑free dressing. It won't be as traditional, but it'll still taste great.
