How do I make High-Protein Cottage Cheese and Chive Bagels:
These easy cottage cheese bagels come together with just a few simple steps. Blend, mix, knead, shape, and bake for soft, chewy homemade bagels packed with protein and flavour.
Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper or a silicone baking mat.
1: Blend the cottage cheese in a food processor until smooth. This gives the bagels a smooth texture

2: Add the blended cottage cheese, flour, cheese, and chives to a mixing bowl. Mix with a fork until combined.

3: Use your hands to bring the dough together, then transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead for 4-5 minutes until smooth. Divide the dough into 5 equal portions and roll each into a ball.

4: Poke a hole through the centre of each ball and gently stretch to form a bagel shape. Place the bagels on the prepared baking tray. Brush the tops with beaten egg, then sprinkle with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and a little salt and pepper.

5: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

6: Allow to cool slightly on a cooling rack before serving.

Variations of High-Protein Cottage Cheese and Chive Bagels:
How to store and freeze High-Protein Cottage Cheese and Chive Bagels:
- Storing – Allow the bagels to cool completely before storing. Place them in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 4 days. Enjoy them cold, or toast them to refresh their texture.
- Freezing – Once cooled, wrap the bagels individually or place them in a freezer-safe container or bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheating – To enjoy, thaw overnight in the fridge or at room temperature for a few hours. Alternatively, slice and toast straight from frozen. A quick toast brings back their delicious chewy texture and makes them taste freshly baked.
- I like to freeze these bagels individually and grab one as I head out the door for an easy high-protein breakfast or lunch at work

- Blend the cottage cheese until smooth - This helps create a smooth, evenly textured dough and prevents any large curds in the finished bagels.
- Don’t overwork the dough - Knead just until the dough is smooth and comes together. Over-kneading can make the bagels tougher than they need to be.
- Flour your hands if needed - If the dough feels a little sticky when shaping, lightly flour your hands and work surface.
- Make the holes bigger than you think - The bagels will puff up as they bake, so start with a slightly larger hole in the centre to maintain that classic bagel shape.
- Batch cook and freeze - I always make a double batch and freeze them individually. They’re perfect for grabbing on busy mornings or taking to work for breakfast or lunch.
- Get creative with toppings - These bagels are fantastic with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and if you really want to impress, try them topped with my homemade gravlax.
FAQ
How much protein is in a bagel with cottage cheese?
The protein content will vary depending on the ingredients used, but a homemade cottage cheese bagel typically contains significantly more protein than a traditional bagel.
Are protein bagels okay for weight loss?
Yes, protein bagels can be a great option for weight loss when enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. Their higher protein content may help keep you feeling fuller for longer, which can support appetite control and reduce snacking between meals.
What foods are high in protein?
Some excellent high-protein foods include cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs, chicken breast, turkey, fish, tofu, lentils, beans, edamame, nuts, seeds, and protein-rich dairy products.
Is cottage cheese a good high protein?
Yes! Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein and contains essential nutrients such as calcium and B vitamins. It’s a versatile ingredient that can be used in both sweet and savoury recipes.
Which is healthier, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese?
Both Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are nutritious, high-protein foods. Greek yogurt is often higher in probiotics, while cottage cheese is typically lower in carbohydrates and offers a slightly different nutrient profile. The healthier choice depends on your dietary needs and personal preferences.
Can I make these cottage cheese bagels gluten-free?
Yes, you can try using a gluten-free self-raising flour blend designed for baking. The texture may be slightly different from traditional bagels, but they will still be delicious and high in protein. If needed, add a little extra flour if the dough feels too sticky to handle.
